HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012000 - 2000-466 IN THE MATTER DECLARING RESOLUTION NO. 2000/466 OCTOBER AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, breast cancer is a devastating public health crisis, the most common cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S. and California; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa has one of the highest incidence rates of breast cancer in the state. Rates for African American, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics and Caucasian women are all above the state average; and WHEREAS, early detection --- through self-breast examinations and mammograms --- is the best way to improve a woman's chances for survival against breast cancer; WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Breast Cancer Partnership is a coalition formed by community-based organizations, breast cancer survivors, advocates, health care providers and county agencies to mare breast cancer screening a community priority; WHEREAS, the Partnership would like to honor the special efforts of community organizations to educate and raise awareness of low income and underserved women about the importance of breast health check-ups; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim the month of October, 2000 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 3rd day of October, 2000.
