RESOLUTION NO. 2000/428
WHEREAS Pam Aguilar of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal
Employees is recognized as a Labor Leader of the Year; and
HWEREA,S Pam has provided proven leadership both within the labor movement, and her
community, as an advocate for social and economic justice; and
U EREA, , the number of working women in the labor force has grown from 5.3 million in
1990 to 65 million in 1999 and now make up 46.2 of the labor farce; and
4WEREAS, working women earn only 73 cents for the dollar men earned, yet 12.8 million
families depend on a woman to provide financial support for those families; and
4WEREAS, union women in 1997 earned 40 percent more than nonunion women, according to
union wage data based on median weekly earnings and are more likely to provide health benefits for
their families; and
KWEREAS; women make up a growing percentage of union membership with 39 percent of
union members being women in 1997 yet unions still have not fully broken the "glass ceiling" that
prevents many union women from being leaders within the labor movement
NOW, YHEREFORI, BE ITRESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County does hereby recognize Pam Aguilar as the 2000 Labor-21abor Dinner Labor Leader of
the Year for her relentless commitment to improving the lives of working families and for her
advocacy for working women.
PASSED AAD ADOPTED ON September 12, 2000 by a unanimous vote of the Board
members present.
