HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012000 - 2000-194 C,13 Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County,State of California IN THE MATTER OF ENDORSING THE ) RESOLUTION 110.2000/194 "REINVESTING IN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC ) SCHOOLS" INTIATIVE AND REACHING THE) NATIONAL AVERAGE IN SCHOOL FUNDING) WHEREAS,the Constitution of the state of California stipulates that K-12 education shall have first priority among the expenditures of the state's public funds; and WHEREAS,public education is the single most important public investment in our nation's future and funding must be sufficient to meet the educational needs of our students; and WHEREAS,the success of the state's economic future is dependent on a highly skilled citizenry with advanced educational competence; and WHEREAS, California currently ranks 501h in class size, and 51"in instructional computers per student;and WHEREAS, California's public school funding is 40ch in the nation and more than $1000 per student below the national average; and WHEREAS, California has recently enacted the nation's most rigorous standards for all students along with a new assessment and accountability system; and WHEREAS, California has a dire shortage of teachers who are qualified to deliver the new state standards; and WHEREAS,the "Reinvesting in California Schools Act"ballot initiative will bring California to the national average in per student funding for education, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County supports the passage of the"Reinvesting in California Schools Act"and encourages participation in Sacramento on May 8,2000 for Action Day for Schools rally.
