HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012000 - 2000-078 C', 15.I The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County In the Matter of Resolution No. 2000/78 RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 21,2000 AS "PRESIDENT'S DAY" IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, the original version of the holiday was in commemoration of George Washington's birthday in 1796; and WHEREAS, by the early 19a'century, Washington's Birthday had taken firm root in the American experience as a bona fide national holiday; and WHEREAS, then another revered President, Abraham Lincoln, came along with the first formal observance in 1865; and WHEREAS, Lincoln's Birthday did not become a federal holiday like Washington's, it did become a legal holiday in several states; and WHEREAS, in 1968 legislation enacted HR 15951 affecting several federal holidays one of these being Washington's Birthday; and WHEREAS, the observation was shifted to the third Monday in February each year which took effect in 1971; and WHEREAS, while the holiday in February is still officially known as Washington's Birthday, it has become popularly known as "President's Day" honoring both Washington and Lincoln as well as all other men who have served as President. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California, does hereby recognize the third Monday in February as "President's Day" and encourage all citizens in Contra Costa County to honor both President Washington and Lincoln, as well as all the other men who have served as President of the United States.
