HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011999 - 99-240 Board of Supervisors Of Contra Costa County, State of California In the Matter Proclaiming ) May 9-- IS.. 1999 as Child } Cara Awareness Week in Contra Costa County ) Resolution No. 99. 240 Whereas, child care is a priority in Contra Costa County as recognized in the Children's Report Card, Fall 1998, and notes that, gin addition to meeting the needs of working parents, child care must be seen as investing in future students, workers and parents.' and; Whereas,the Little Hoover Commission states (Caring for our Children, Sept. 1998) that California has a shortage of nearly 1.5 million licensed child care spaces, and that this estimate likely understates the demand for child care services; and Whereas, the Little Hoover Commission also recognizes that care provided to infants and toddlers significantly affects a child's capacity to learn and succeed in later life; and Whereas, the Child Care Council of Contra Costa County reports in a study conducted in 1996 that nearly one-half of the infants in the North/Central portion of the County were left without care because of the lack of infant care facilities. At the time of the study, there was a need for 3,267 slots for infant care and only 1,580 available in the near vicinity. With the growth in the county over the past few years, the need has only become greater. "Therefore, be It resolved that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim May 9-- 16, 1899 as Child Care Awareness Week In Contra Costa County, and urges all citizens to support measures that will result In quality child care being provided to meet the needs of Infants and young children In our County and State.
