HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011999 - 99-224 The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County In the Matter of Resolution No. 99/224 RECOGNIZING MAY 6, 1999 AS CALIFORNIA"WORK AT ROME DAY'S IN CONTRA COS'T'A COUNTY WHEREAS, Telecommuting or home-based business is an innovative business strategy that enables approximately 30 million Americans to work productively in their own homes on a part-time or full-time basis; and WHEREAS, California,with over 3.4 million home-businesses, and half of those(1.7 million)telecommuters,is a leader in this growing trend; and WHEREAS, California is fortunate to have the telecommunications infrastructure and technology to support telecommuting and other work-at-home activities; and WHEREAS, the demands on the American worker continue to soar and the availability of technology and the need for greater flexibility in the workforce has made telecommuting a feasible alternative and supplement to the traditional office; and WHEREAS, scores of private companies and public entities that have successfully implemented telecommuting practices in the workplace include;Marriott International,American Express,the United States Government and the many California state agencies; and WHEREAS, by promoting a work-at-home environment and decreasing traffic, telecommuting simplifies compliance with the federal air quality standards while simultaneously conserving fuel,reducing vehicle pollution and reducing highway infrastructure wear,and WHEREAS, telecommuting and home-based businesses are successful methods to expand employment opportunities for persons with disabilities; and WHEREAS, in addition to demonstrating impressive benefits versus costs for many organizations,telecommuting has increased employee productivity,improved morale,reduced sick leave,promoted a more flexible means of performing job responsibilities and enabled employees to better balance family and work demands. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California,does hereby proclaim May 6, 1999 as"CALIFORNIA WORK AT ROME DAY IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY"and urge all citizens and organizations to participate in appropriate activities being held to recognize this important event.
