In the Matter Recognizing Bill Pence )
of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District )
for Being Selected as Contra Costa County and the )
State of California Teacher of the Year ) Resolution No.99/120
WHEREAS,Bill Pence,with 26 years of classroom experience,teaches biology,marine
biology,and oceanography to students at California High School in San Ramon,and
WHEREAS,this extraordinarily committed teacher has been recognized numerous times
for his tremendous accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom. Bill has
received a fellowship from Genentech's Access Excellence prom and the National
Science Teacher Association recon him as one of the top biology teachers in the
United States;and
WHEREAS,two of his students in 1994 became the youngest members of the national
Human Genome Project team and discovered the home genes of three cancer-related
chromosomes;and
WHEREAS,his greatest recognition comes from the thousands of young people who
have had the privilege of being his students and who have become truly engaged in the
process of learning and have had Mr.Pence as an inspiring example of a life-long learner,
and
WHEREAS,after a devastating personal tragedy,Bill is an example of the consummate
educator as an articulate and tremendously effective speaker,educating parents and
young people about the warning signs of abusive teen-age relationships,and
WHEREAS,Bill Pence was selected by community,business and education leaders as
the 1998 Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year.He went through a state-wide
selection process that cited his passion for teaching and mentoring students and
colleagues and was chosen to represent the State of California in the 1999 National
Teacher of the Year conference:
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY that William Pence be commended.for the many
contributions he has made to public school education and the children of Contra Costa
County; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board is deeply appreciative of Mr.Pence's
dedication to children and their education.
