HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011999 - 1999-525 '1'YL+e In he Matter Q Resolution No 99/525 Endorsing the A111ance for Public Education's request to the State of California to reinvest the West Contra Costa Unified School Districts debt into educational programs within the district WHEREAS, in 199 t,to continue operations,the West Contra Costa Unified School District signed a loan agreement that led to massive salary and budget,reductions;and WHEREAS,to,date,the West Centra Costa unified School District remains hampered by the $1.8S million it owes yearly to the'state,an amount that is equal to the total district budget for books and supplies iff Its elemcntfry,middle and high schools;and WHEREAS,the school district's general fund dollars that are urgently needed to provide adequate em pioyee compensation,purchase supplies and fund the district's education program,are being used to make loan payments to the state;and WHEREAS,the consequences of this current situation are felt most keenly by the children and youth of our community,with each student In our district;directly,receiving less on their education than their counterparts in neighboring districts;and WHEREAS,this year'sf'righ school seniors Crave each had over$4;800 spent on debt repayment that rightfully should have been Invested In their education;.and WHEREAS,despite the thallenges of the past,parents,elected,officials and the community are rallying behind the school district,Including approving a recent school band measure by 750,6, and WHEREAS, because of the detriment this der i3 causing c►ur children and the support the school district Is receiving from the commuinl y, theAlllance for Public Education Is asking the State of California to allow the.funds that are-now being used,for debt repayment to be retained for reinv+�stment,in;the"West Conga Costa Untried School Dlstriciss educational program. r NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors does hereby support the request of the A1liarxce for Public Education to call inion the State ofCallfornia to allow the funds now being used,for debt;repayment to be retained-for reinvestment In the West Centra Costa nified School[ lsti lt"O e W tatlonal program, (--16-Lr John Gioia, District I g.
