In the Matter of Resolution No.99/504
RECOGNIZING OCTOBER, 1999 AS
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence is a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages,
income levels, and sexes; and
WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual's privacy, dignity,
security, and humanity, due to the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual,psychological,
and economic control or abuse; and
WHEREAS, the total health care costs of family violence are estimated in the hundreds
of millions each year; and
WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives has spent the past twenty-two years
working to eliminate domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives is the largest domestic violence agency in
northern California and the sole provider of domestic violence services in Contra Costa County
serving 12, 500 women annually; and
WHEREAS,Battered Women's Alternatives is a multi-service agency which provides a
broad range of services,including a twenty-four hour crisis line; shelter; legal advocacy; one-to-
one counseling; couples counseling; family counseling;employment assistance' batterer's
treatment program;emergency response teams working in collaboration with police departments;
and prevention programs; and
WHEREAS,only a coordinated community effort will put a stop to this heinous crime.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Contra Costa, California, does hereby recognize the important work done by Battered
Women's Alternatives and hereby proclaim the month of October, 1999 as DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH,and urge all citizens to actively participate in the
scheduled activities and programs sponsored by Battered Women's Alternatives to work toward
the elimination of personal and institutional violence against women.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 5th day of October,
1999.
