WHEREAS, °breast cancer is devastating public health. crisis, the most common cancer among
w mI n and the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S. and California; and
WHEREAS, w1 ContraCosta have tf a sec nd highest incidence r b1m :� cancer er yin the state.
Contra Costa's breast cancer rate is the highest M the state among Hispanics, second highest among
Asian women and third highest among African Amen* an women; and
WHEREAS, early detection --- through clinical breast exanunations and mammograms is the best
Way
to improve a woman s chances for survival against breastan cancer;

WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Breast Cancer Partnership is a coalition formed by co -based
e
organizations, breast cancer ear s ry ors, advocates# health care providers and county agencies to
make breast cancer screening a community pnrity;
WHEREAS'L.the Partnership would like to honor the special efforts f community ra zati ns t
educate and rase awareness or i w income and underserved women about the importance of breast
health check-ups*
N W„ ItRa RE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does
hereby proclaim the month of October, 1999 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
