Whereas, the California Department of Health Services, Maternal & Child Health,
Domestic Violence Section, John Muir Medical Foundation, the Junior League of
Oakland East Flay, Inc., Kaiser Permanente, the Mt. Diablo Unified School
District, and Wells Fargo Bank have demonstrated their commitment to violence
prevention through the provision of funds towards the Mount Diablo
Relationship Violence Prevention Project; and
Whereas, this project has been a collaboration resulting in the Battered Women's
Alternatives and the Junior League of Oakland East Bay having developed and
delivered a four day"You Never Win With Violence" curriculum to 4,108 seventh
grade students during the past two years; and
Whereas, first year evaluation results show that students' knowledge about the
kinds of violence increased by 50%. Two hundred fifty parents in the Mount
Diablo Unified School District have successfully completed the six-hour
"Teenworks" Parent Education series. Three hundred seventy-two middle school
LL staff have completed an eight hour staff development training and 150 conflict
managers have been trained in the ten middle schools in the past two years and
resolved over 54 conflicts; and
Whereas, "Hear Our Voices", a gala affair, is being held on Monday, May 24, y
1999 at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek; and
Whereas, "Hear Our Voices", a community celebration which honors the
accomplishments of the Mount Diablo Relationship Violence Prevention Project,
is being held during Increase the Peace Month.
Now, therefore, be It resolved that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County proclaims May 24, 1999 as "Hear Our Voices Day" in the County and
encourages all residents to support this most important cause.
