DR. GLENN SEABORG, Nobel.Laureate
f a People's greatness is measured by the quality of its individual members, then the passing of
Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg diminishes us all. As a 50 year resident of Lafayette, his contributions were
appreciated at the national, state and local community levels. Some of his many accomplishments
Jude:
1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of the element Plutonium and for
his contribution in defining the chemistry of transuranium elements.
Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission
Member of the United States delegation that negotiated the Limited Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty.
Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley and Director and Chairman of
the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley.
Participated on the Manhattan Project and assisted in developing the atomic bomb.
Associate Director at Large of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory
Creator of the Actinide Concept that illustrates how the transuranium elements
relate to other elements as well as fit within the Periodic Table of Elements.
Discovered 10 additional elements and numerous isotopes and radioisotopes. He
remains the only individual to hold patents on a chemical element.
r. Seaborg and his beloved wife, Helen, are parents of six children. As a long-time resident of
Contra Costa County, Dr. Seaborg was fond of hiking on local and regional trails. As an avid
environmentalist, his efforts to support trails, open space and park development were widely
recognized.
Because of Glenn Seaborg's presence on this earth the world is a better place. His genius
contributed much to humanity, and the legacy of his lifetime is an integral part of the human
story. It is with sadness that we acknowledge our loss.
