Board of Supervisors
Of Contra Costa County
In the Matter of Resolution No.99/16
Certificate of Commendation to
Ken Carter
January 19, 1999.
WHEREAS,Ken Carter, graduated from Richmond High School with significant
academic and athletic honors,holding the 1977 Richmond High School basketball
scoring record;and
WHEREAS, Ken Carter is giving back to his community by serving with dedication and
distinction,as the respected and honored basketball coach of Richmond High School; and
WHEREAS,Ken Carter required every member of his varsity and junior varsity to sign
a pledge promising to maintain a 2.3 grade point average (above the required 2.0), study
at least 10 hours a week, attend all classes and sit in the front row of each of those
classes, and
WHEREAS,Ken Carter decided,when his team did not fulfill their pledge,to impose a
basketball lockout, permitting the usual practice and game times to serve as study
sessions for his students; and
WHEREAS, Ken Carter has demonstrated his commitment to continue teaching his team
the significance of a good education,by setting his team practice at 5:00 p.m.,to allow
for extra time for his students to enhance academically; and
WHEREAS,.Ken Carter,being the first coach to put academics before athletics with a
high school basketball lockout,has brought positive light to the City of Richmond and
Contra Costa County,and demonstrated our community's commitment to our youth and
their education.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Contra Costa County, State of California,publicly recognizes and commends Ken
Carter for loving his students enough to teach them that they are more important than the
sum of their athletic skills;he has set an example of what we should strive to impart to
each and every child whose life we touch.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 19`h day of January,
1999.
