HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011998 - 1998-484 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter Supporting ) Measures to Prevent ) MTBE in the Water Supply ) No. 981484 WHEREAS, citizens of Contra Costa County are rightfully concerned about the health impacts mused by MTBE in their drinking water as well as taste and odor problems; and WHEREAS, the number of contaminated sites associated with leaking underground fuel tanks is growing at an alarming rate in California. Recently, the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board compiled a list which indicated 128 such MTBE contaminated sites in Contra Costa County; and WHEREAS, MTBE also has been detected in a growing number of reservoirs and lakes around the state; and WHEREAS, some members of the oil industry and several environmental organizations now feel that the use of MTBE is not necessary to retain the clean-air benefits that have been achieved; that the industry can manufacture reformulated or cleaner-buming gasoline without the use of MTBE: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County : 1. Supports efforts at the state and federal levels to eliminate MTBE from the water supply; 2. Supports continued research into the public health impacts of MTBE in drinking water; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa county will actively support measures to remove MTBE from the water supply.
