HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011998 - 1998-458 0/ 59�j OIL& IN THE MATTER OF PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS BREAST RESOLUTION NO. 98/4S8 CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, breast cancer is a devastating public health crisis and is the most common cancer among women and the second leading cause of death for women in the U.S. and California;and WHEREAS, women in Contra Costa County have the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the state,and Contra Costa's breast cancer rate is the highest in the state among Hispanics,second highest among Asian women,and third highest among African American women—African American women are twice as likely to die from breast cancer due to late stage diagnosis;early detection— through clinical breast examinations and mammograms is the best way to improve a woman's chances for survival against breast cancer. WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Breast Cancer Partnership is a coalition formed by community-based organizations,breast cancer survivors,advocates,health care providers,and county agencies to make breast cancer screening a community priority;and WHEREAS, the Partnership would like to honor community agencies such as Pittsburg Preschool Coordinating Council,Familias Unidas,Lao Family Community Development Inc.,English Action Center,Marleen M.Quint(WHEN),Asians&Pacific Islanders for Reproductive Health,and the Women's Cancer Resource Center for their special efforts in educating and raising awareness of low income and underserved women about the importance of breast health check-ups;and WHEREAS, during the month of October,the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and the Partnership will sponsor three evening breast health clinics at the medical center,Pittsburg Public Health Clinic,and Richmond Public Health Clinic;the Partnership will co- sponsor a Spanish Breast Health Conference on October 3rd at the Easter Hill United Methodist Church in Richmond—a free Spanish conference featuring various speakers,women's testimonials,refreshments,and a raffle;the Partnership together with the"Picnic People" will honor breast cancer survivors and their immediate families on October I I'at Rose's 172y -a free picnic at the East Bay Regional Park in honor of Rose Johnsen who passed away in January of this year;and WHEREAS, the Partnership will conduct tailored breast health campaigns to the African American community by collaborating with the African American Task Group to host a reception for their Calendar Project on October ISS'in Richmond— I9 African American breast cancer survivors are featured in this 21-month calendar;the Partnership's Lesbian Task Group will have a reading from the book"Caring for Ourselves;The Lesbian Health Book",at Boadecia's Books in Kensington on October 16",and WHEREAS, recognizing the barriers that monolingual and non-English speaking women face in accessing the breast health system,the Partnership in collaboration with the John Muir/Mt.Diablo Community Health Benefit Corporation is instituting the Patient Navigator Program.
