IN THE MATTER OF RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 991457
THE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
OF THE FOUNDING OF THE CITY OF
LAFAYETTE
WHEREAS, THE CITY OF LAFAYETTE was founded in 1848 by Elam Brown when he
purchased Rancho Acalanes from William Leidesdorff for one thousand dollars; and
THE FIRST RESIDENCE was constructed in Lafayette,by Elam Brown and his wife
Margaret, and
WHEREAS, THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT was established along the present Golden Gate
Way between First and Second Streets as an overnight stopping place between logging areas in the
eastern side of the Oakland hills and Pacheco where the logs were loaded on steamers for San
Francisco, and
WHEREAS, A POST OFFICE, LAFAYETTE,was accepted by the Postal Service in 185-,, having
been applied for by Benjamin Shreve, the town's first schoolteacher. In 1864 Brown realigned Moraga
Road to its present location where a general store and post office were erected near the corner of
Moraga Road and Plaza Way. Elam Brown gave the Plaza Park in front of these buildings to the
citizens of Lafayette in 1864. Today, there are 34,094 residents in Lafayette. The community has
maintained a country and rural ambiance that makes it a very desirable place to live and work. It is a
vital, important and integral part of Contra Costa County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
does hereby honor and commend the
