WHEREAS, everyday, 150,000 vehicles pass through the Caldecott Tunnel, with the majority
of the travelers being Contra Costa County residents or workers commuting to and from jobs;
and
WHEREAS, with the current three bores, only one is available to eastbound traffic in the
morning and to westbound traffic in the evening which causes long back ups in commute traffic;
and
WHEREAS, with eastbound traffic expected to increase from the burgeoning businesses in
Contra Costa County and the Tri-Valley/Pleasanton corridor, the single-bore direction will
become even more congested; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) will soon be looking at this
issue and Senators Rainey and Kopp and Assemblyrnembers Leach and Torlakson are gathering
support from local entities for legislation (AB 2010) that has been introduced to require
Caltrans to complete a feasibility study; and
WHEREAS, all of Contra Costa County's citizens would greatly benefit from this addition, and
it would be wise to begin the effort with a feasibility study.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares support for
a ,FOURTH BORE TO THE CALD7ECOYT? ML FEASIB'IL=S77JD,Yand
urges the state legislature to pass AB 2010.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON August 4, 1998, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
