IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING RESOLUTION NO. 98/291
JUNE 20, 1998 AS "DR. JOSE RIZAL DAY"
IN CON'T'RA COSTA COUNTY
WhE1 EAS, DDR.,jOSERML is a national hero of the Philippines who was born in 1861 and died in 1896. Dr.Rizal
is recognized as a scientist,artist,philosopher,educator,historian,and most of all a patriot and martyr who died for his country;
and
"IjEREAS, DR.JO.SERIZAL dedicated his life to reforming the Philippine government,defending the rights of the
Filipino citizens,and championing the recognition and respect for their individual freedoms and human rights;and
Wffl?EAS, DR.JOSE RIZAL is a recognized hero being celebrated by the Filipino community this year with the
theme of"FREEDOM THROUGHFDUCATION." The Pinole Library and the Filipino Community is sponsoring an event
on June 20, 1998 at the Pinole Library. The Pinole Library has the largest collection of Filipiniana materials in the United States
and is home to an extensive collection of Dr.Rizal's original works;and
WIMMAS, DR.JOSERIZA.L is a national treasure of the Philippines and the Filipino-American population of Contra
Costa County. His philosophy on social and political reform through non-violence parallels that of Martin Luther King,Jr. and
Mahatma Gandhi in the quest for civil rights and fair treatment for all.
NOW,, THEREFORE, BE IT)?HOL VED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby
declare June 20, 1998 as:

PASSED by vote of the Board of Supervisors members present on this 9th day of June, 1998.
