FIRST NIGHT — MARTINEZ NEW YEARS EVE
CELEBRATION
WHEREAS, FIRST NIGHT is an internationally honored, family oriented, alcohol-free, countywide
celebration of New Year's Eve scheduled for December 31, 1998 in the downtown and adjacent areas
of Martinez; and
WHEREAS, FIRST NIGHT celebration will revive the ancient tradition of marking the New Year with
art, ritual and festivity using a present day context; and
WHEREAS, FIRST NIGHT celebrations broaden and deepen the public appreciation of the visual and
performing arts through an innovative, diverse and high quality New Year's Eve program which
offers Contra Costa County citizens a shared cultural experience that is accessible and affordable to
all; and
WHEREAS, FIRST NIGHT shall use the downtown area of Martinez as its stage by transforming both
indoor and outdoor venues into performing arenas that encourage cultural animation, public
interaction and innovation; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby
requests that the citizens and business community attend and support
PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 12th day of May,
1998.
