WHEREAS,'the number of hungry people in Contra Costa County is increasing, despite the
efforts of local chanties to provide food to residents in need; and
WHEREAS, currently, the Contra Costa Food Bank and its network of 150 member agencies
with over 200 distribution sites is helping to feed more than 30,500 individuals every month,
and the demand keeps growing; and
WHEREAS, local charities and organizations such as the Food and Nutrition Policy
Consortium are taking steps to improve food access in Contra Costa County, which threatens
the health and well being of our community; and
WHEREAS, the real answers to the problem of hunger, however, require the education and
participation of all citizens of Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS, during Hunger Awareness Weeks, the Food bank is collaborating with the
Anemia Task Force to educate Contra Costa students on the issues of hunger and nutrition.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares April 20-
May 1, 1998, as HLWGER AWARENESS WEEKS in Contra Costa County and urges
all sectors of the community to support the fight against hunger.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON April 28, 1998, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
