In the Matter of Declaring April-June, 1998, }

WHEREAS, violence has an impact on every segment of the county population, particularly
youth ages 14- 19 who are at highest risk of gun violence, and men, women and children of
all ages suffer from the impact of media violence, physical and sexual assault, homicide and
battering; and
WHEREAS, for more than a decade, Contra Costa County has led the nation in innovative
violence prevention efforts including the Action Plan for Violence Prevention, countywide gun
safety regulations, and the creation of regional partnerships to address violence prevention; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County supports private public partnerships to address social
issues because community involvement is key to community problem solving; and
WHEREAS, the County's Health Services Department and the Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention Commission along with Kaiser Permanente have agreed to coordinate
and sponsor the Fifth Annual Increase the Peace Campaign for Violence Prevention from
April through Pune 1998; and,
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County's community partnerships of Opportunity West, (West
County), Delta 2000 (East County), and Center for Human Development (Central County)
will coordinate a series of violence prevention activities involving the schools, various
community groups, and local government during the Increase the Peace Campaign;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County declares APRIL ,JUNE 1998, AS INCREASE THE PEACE VIOLENCE
PREVE.N7YON MON71IS and continues its support of efforts to promote violence
prevention in Contra Costa County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON April 14, 1998, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
