HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011998 - 1998-165 ��rd o�Juperv6ard �onfrtt t>odftt l.,oun�y, �Eata a`[.,ali�arnia SUBSTANCE ABUSE ADVISORY BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP FORUM ALLIANCE RESOLUTION N0.9$116 5 ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS,alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death,killing nearly 100,000 Americans every year;and WHEREAS, 13.8 million Americans suffer from alcohol-related problems,including 8.1 million alcoholics;and WHEREAS,43%of Americans have been exposed to alcoholism in their families;and WHEREAS, 13 million Americans drink heavily,which means they consume five or more drinks at a time on five or more days a month;and WHEREAS,heavy drinkers are five times more likely to use illicit drugs as Americans who do not drink heavily;and WHEREAS,nearly one-forth of all Americans admitted to general hospitals have alcohol problems or are undiagnosed alcoholics who are being treated for the consequences of their drinking;and WHEREAS,alcoholism and alcohol-related problems cost the American economy at least$100 million in health care and lost productivity every year;and WHEREAS,alcoholism and alcohol-related problems can be prevented and treated;and WHEREAS,the Substance Abuse Advisory Board and the Community Partnership Forum Alliance,coordinate Contra Costa County Alcohol Awareness Month in cooperation with communities to offer our citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to health,and alcohol-free lifestyles; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim that April 1998 is Alcohol Awareness Month in Contra Costa County. As members of the Contra Costa County's Board of Supervisors,we also call upon all citizens,parents,governmental agencies,public and private institutions,businesses,hospitals and schools in Contra Costa County to join us in fighting America's number-one drug problem by pledging to support research,education, intervention and treatment for alcoholism and alcohol-related problems. PASSED by and adopted by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 140'day of April, 1998.
