IN THE MATTER. OF RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 99/56
THE DEDICATION OF THE PONY
EXPRESS MONUMENT TO THE CITY
OF LAFAYETTE
WHEREAS, THE PONY EXPRESS has been preserved by the City of Lafayette as an important part of its
heritage; and
WHEREAS, THE PONY EXPRESS, served as a picturesque means of mail delivery founded on April 3,
1860 and served for over 19 months as an effective mail service,until the completion of the transcontinental
telegraph line; and
WHEREAS, THE PONY EXPRESS carried mail more than 1,900 miles from the East Coast to California
in twelve to fourteen days. Prior to that,mail deliveries took four to six weeks. While mail between San Francisco
and Sacramento was usually sent by boat,there were many times when the Express riders missed the Steamer. It
was at those times the mail was delivered by the Pony Express riding into Lafayette for a change of Horses before
venturing on to San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, THE "LAFAYETTE HOUSE" operated by N. P. Lake, served as The Lafayette Express
Station and was located at the comer of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Moraga Road.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does
hereby honor and commend the
