IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Endorsing )
YOUM W ZE 98 ) RESOLUTION NO. 981 110
WHEREAS, Youth VOTE '98 is being implemented by the Contra Costa Countywide Youth
Commission in collaboration with students and organizations from around the county; and
WHEREAS, Youth VOTE is a ballot prepared by young people for young people, with a
realistic election taking place in high schools during October 1-2 1, 1998; and
WHEREAS, Youth VOTE was started six years ago in San Francisco by Coleman Advocates'
for Youth and Children to give youth the opportunity to learn about the voting process, prepare
them to become active voters when they tum 18 years old, and to give elected officials and
citizens a guideline on where youth stand on issues; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, Contra Costa County collaborated with San Francisco, Alameda, and
Marin counties to implement Youth VOTE Bay Area-wide and formed the Bay Area Youth
VOTE Alliance (B.AYVA); and
WHEREAS, 8,500 students participated in Contra Costa during the 1996 vote and 27,000
in the four-county region, and the results were distributed to elected officials and voters; and
WHEREAS, planners will be working closely with teachers to prepare students for election day
by encouraging the teachers to add Youth VOTE to their curriculum; and
WHEREAS, by asking teachers to include Youth VOTE in their curriculum, not only will the
youth involved in the planning team about issues and voting but so will the participating
students, thereby, preparing the next generation of voters to actually want to vote.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors endorses YOUTH
VOTE 98 and encourages schools, teachers, students, and citizens in Contra Costa County to
participate in this most worthwhile event.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON March 17, 1998, by a unanimous vote of the Board
members present.
