Gackowski Office of the Sheriff 1 WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski was born on December 3, 1541, Tripler Army Hospital, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, and has been a resident of Contra Costa County since 1953; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski served his Country as a member of the United States Army for three years, with assignments that included the Republic of South Korea; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski was hired by the Office of the Sheriff as a Deputy Sheriff on October 17, 1966, and promoted through the ranks to the position of Commander, and WHEREAS, John and his wife Phyllis, have been married for 31 years, and 22-year residents of the community of Clayton, where they raised their two children, Nicole and Jonathan, and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski holds A.A. and B.A. Degrees in Police Science and Public Administration, and as an attendee at the 1315' Session of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, was designated as the Graduation Speaker; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski, has had assignments in Patrol, Detention, Investigations, the Police Academy, Los Medanos College, as an Academy Supervisor and Part-time Instructor, and was assigned to the City of San Ramon as the first Police Chief; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski, as the Chief of Police of San Ramon, established a service-oriented police department, and implemented a Youth Diversion Program, a D.A.R.E. Program, secured an O.T.S. Traffic Grant, participated on the Board of Directors for the Central Contra Costa County Narcotics Enforcement Team, and implemented an Emergency Services Program; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski was assigned as the Commander of the Field Operations Bureau, which includes the Patrol and Investigation Divisions, and was instrumental in providing community- oriented law enforcement services to the 274,004 residents residing in the unincorporated areas of the County, and the four contract cities and towns of Danville, Lafayette, Orinda, and San Ramon; and WHEREAS, members of the Office of the Sheriff who had the opportunity to work for John during the course of his career were extremely fortunate and grateful for his friendship, dedication, hard work and undying loyalty towards the Office and its members; and WHEREAS, John L. Gackowski has selected March 23, 1593, as the effective date of his retirement. NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, do hereby recognize, congratulate, and commend Commander John L. Gackowski, and acknowledges with appreciation his 31 years of service to the Citizens of the County, and extend the Board's best wishes for a happy retirement. PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 13"' day of January, 1998.
