THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15TH-211T919971
AS POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK IN
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS,the Hazardous Materials Division has been protecting the environment of Contra Costa County via the
enforcement of hazardous waste laws since 1993;and
WHEREAS,the coordination of the following programs has led to our recent designation as the Certified Unified
Program Agency:
• Hazardous Materials Business Plan Program • Clean Water NPDES Inspection Program
• Hazardous Waste Generator Program • Household Hazardous Waste Program
• Accidental Release Prevention Program • Small Quantity Generator Disposal Program
formerly Risk Management Prevention
• Underground Storage Tank • Community Warning Program
• Incident Response Team Pollution Prevention Program;and
• Site Mitigation
WHEREAS, last year the newly formed Pollution Prevention Program focused on
• Preventing pollution at Merrithew Memorial Hospital
• Educating painting contractors about hazardous waste issues
• Coordinating with ABAG on the Green Business Program;and
• Informing the public of our many beneficial programs; and
WHEREAS,the Pollution Prevention Program will focus next year's activities on assessing the County corporation
yards for both compliance and possible waste reduction measures,and implementing the Bay Area Green Business
Program;and
WHEREAS,practicing pollution prevention can provide businesses the needed competitive edge by reducing purchase
and disposal costs,increasing worker safety,and gaining the business of customers who are interested in environmental
protection;and
WHEREAS,Contra Costa County has taken on a leadership role in Pollution Prevention within the Bay Area and State
by chairing the Bay Area Hazardous Waste Reduction Committee and being a representative of the National and
Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtables;and
WHEREAS,by focusing on pollution prevention activities,the Board of Supervisors and the Hazardous Materials
Program will address the challenge of the 90's:combining economic competitiveness with environmental protection.
NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does proclaim
