In the Matter of Proclaiming the Week of -
May -31, 1997, as ELDER ABUSE ) RESOLU77ON No. 970 245

WHEREAS, May has been designated as Older Americans Month which is dedicated to actions
supporting the well being of our senior citizens, and
WIEREAS, in 1990, the United States House of Representatives' Select Committee on Aging's
Subcommittee on Health and .Long-Term Care estimated that only 1 in 14 incidents of elder
abuse is actually reported, and the State of California has estimated a 26.5 percent increase in
reports of elder or dependent abuse totaling 39,000 cases, and
WHEREAS, in 1996, Contra Costa County had 939 reports of abuse to the Social Services
Department and to the Office of the ombudsman; and
WHEREAS, the number of persons over the age of 60 has grown 68 percent in the past 25 years
and is expected to grow another 22 percent in the next 25 years," and
WHEREAS, the Board urges the citizens of Contra Costa County to report and prevent incidents
of eider abuse.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors proclaims the week of
May 25-31 as ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION '4S''EEK in Contra Costa County.
PASSED ,AND ADOP7ED ON May 20, 1997, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
