SUBJECT: "Breastfeeding is a Gift of Lave Month"
SPECIFIC REQUEST{S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RESOLUTION NO. 97/ 59
IN THE MATTER OF PROCLAIMING
February,particularly the week including Valentine's Day,February 14 as
"Breastfeeding,A Gift of Love Month"in Contra Costa County.
WHEREAS: Breastfeeding is the Gold Standard for the nurture and nutrition of infants,providing health, economic
and social benefits to the infant,mother and family that remain unduplicated by any artificial feeding; and
WHEREAS: Breastfeeding success depends on learned skills and the respect and support of women and men whose
lives,personal and professional,touch those of the mother and infant; and
WHEREAS: Progress in breastfeeding success rates is being made in Contra Costa towards the National Healthy
2000 goals of 75%of newborns and 50%of infants 6 months old being breastfed, in that combined breastfeeding rates
at WIC, the Women Infant and Children Supplemental Food Program has shown a significant increase from
approximately 30%in 1993 to 38%in 1996, a triumphant measure for our higher risk families; and
WHEREAS: Merrithew Memorial Hospital and Clinics continues to be the leader in its efforts to provide Baby
Friendly services to families in Contra Costa County and become certified as defined by UNICEF and the World
Health Organization; and
WHEREAS: Breastfeeding is a daily commitment to the life and well being of an infant and family, a precious gift
of love often overshadowed and made difficult by a society dependent on commercial artificial milks and trappings
that promote the separation of infant and parent; and
WHEREAS: Valentines Day is celebrated as a symbol of love,by old and young alike, it is appropriate to take this
opportunity to recognize that special relationship nurtured by breastfeeding.
Therefore be it resolved by the Board of Supervisors that it hereby declares its continuing support and
encouragement of Baby Friendly breastfeeding promotion activities and proclaims Valentines Day and the
month of February as a time to celebrate Breastfeeding,A Gift of Love.
