HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011997 - 1997-036 r IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming the Resolution No. 97/36 Month of February as "Black History Month" in Contra Costa County. WHEREAS African Americans helped found the Nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways as servants, slaves, industrial workers, teachers, reformers, soldiers and pioneers; and WHEREAS African Americans played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of our Nation's life by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in and outside of the home; and WHEREAS African Americans served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social movement, not only to secure their own right to vote and be citizens and be provided equal opportunity, but also in the emancipation movement, the .. _ industrial labor union movement, and the civil rights movement; and WHEREAS African Americans in Contra Costa County have contributed to its development and progress in various roles and levels of responsibility; and WHEREAS despite these contributions, the role of African Americans in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the body of American history: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California, hereby PROCLAIM the month of February 1997 as "Black History Month" in Contra Costa County. PASSED on January 28, 1996 by unanimous vote of the Board members present. I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution on the minutes of this Board of Supervisors on the aforesaid date.
