View Sanitary District on the Dedication of its Plant Improvements to Disinfect Wastewater by the Use of Ultraviolet Light WHEREAS, seventy-two years ago Mt. View Sanitary District was created to provide sanitary sewer and wastewater treatment services to the unincorporated area of Contra Costa County in the vicinity of Martinez; and WHEREAS, during the intervening years since its creation Mt. View Sanitary District has grown with the county to provide sanitary sewer services to the residents of the District and the treatment of-wastewater to protect the waters of the county and state; and WHEREAS, the District's ownership, management and maintenance of a portion of the Shell Marsh has provided the county and state with an environmental wetland that is a natural habitat show place for nature lovers; and WHEREAS,the District's latest accomplishment to preserve and protect the environment is the construction of a project to disinfect treated wastewater by the use of sand filters and ultraviolet light; and WHEREAS, this advanced use of sand filtering and ultraviolet light will enhance the environment by the elimination of the use of acutely hazardous chemical compounds of gaseous chlorine, sulphur dioxide and ammonia in the treatment of wastewater; and WHEREAS,the new state of the art filter and ultraviolet treatment process will meet the District's discharge requirements set by the Regional Water Quality Control Board to provide a wastewater disinfection as effective as chlorine without the use of hazardous chemicals; and WHEREAS, on February 25, 1995, Mt. View Sanitary District will formally dedicate the new sand filter ultraviolet wastewater treatment system at the District's Treatment Plant, End of Arthur Road, Martinez, California, NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED: 1. The Board of Supervisors recognizes the benefits received by the environment and the public health by eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals from the treatment of wastewater. 2. The Mt. View Sanitary District, its Directors, Officers and Employees are congratulated on the completion of the ultraviolet wastewater treatment project. 3. The Board of Supervisors commends the sincere efforts of Mt. View Sanitary District to maintain a healthy environment and sets the District as an example to other public entities of what can be done to protect the public health and maintain our natural habitat. PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 28th day of February, 1995.
