*71E.,REAS Project Hearth was formed in January of 1991 by seven socially conscious women
who wanted to do something to help homeless families; and
WHEREAS, Project Hearth created a partnership with SHELTER, Inc., and is believed to be the
first of its kind in Contra Costa County in which a group of citizens has a partnership with a
social service agency, and
WHER&4S over the past two years, Project Hearth has raised $98,639 and has helped 24'
households including 37adults and 58 children by providing them with extra money for rent or
food, thereby preventing further additions to the homeless population of Contra Costa County;
and
WHEREAS, while marry believe the homeless are "unworthy" or should "get a job" and help
themselves, Project Hearth has been able to overcome these stereotypical ob)ecuons'by giving
to those who find themselves in difficult circumstances; and
WHEREAS, on July 31 Project Hearth is hosting an Evening of Jazz at the Concord Pavilion,
and we wish to lend our support to this fundraising effort by extending our deepest appreciation
for Project Hearth's wonderfil impact on the community and for the positive role model they
have become for other programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares July'31, 1993,
as PROJECT HEARTH DAY in Contra Costa County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON June 22, 1993, by a unanimous'vote of the Board members
present.
