HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011993 - 1993-239 IN THE MATTER OF ] RESOLUTION NO. 93/239 Supporting; Single Pager Health Care Whereas, two thirds of the uninsured are working people or their dependents whose jobs provide no healthcare benefits and who do not qualify for public health care; and Whereas, workers earning minimum wage would have, to pay between 35-40% of their income for a basic healthinsurance policy for a 'family of four; and Whereas, except for 'South Africa, the United States lags behind all other countries in the industrial world in access to health care; and Whereas, the private insurance system diverts billions away from health care and into administration, marketing and profits; and Whereas, 81 million people below the age of 65 have medical problems for which insurance companies charge higher premiums, exclude coverage or deny it altogether; and Whereas, since 1971, Canada has eliminated private health> insurance and has shown national health care works and keeps costs down because it is universal» Whereas, because the American Health Security Act of 1993, legislation cosponsored by Senator Paul Wellston (D-MN) , and by Representatives George Miller(D-CA) , Jim Mc»Dermott(D-WA) and John Conyers (D-MI) establishes the National Health'`Security program which will replace most, Private Health Insurance. Therefore, we, the Contra Costa County Hoard of Supervisors does hereby go on ,record supporting the single payer system of national health care and does support the American Health Security Act of 1993. PASSED AND ADOPTED this day of May 11, 1993, by unanimous vote of the Board members present. I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution entered intheminutes of the Board of Supervisors on the day aforesaid.
