HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011993 - 1993-158 1ao BOARD OF SUPERVISORS O CONTRA COSTA COUNTY IN THE MATTER OF PROMOTING RESOLUTION NO. 931158 The week of April 5-1.1, 1993 as: "Public 'Health Week"' WHEREAS, the California Department of Health Services has declared April 5-11, 1993 "Public Health Week" and is encouraging individual citizens, government agencies and the private sector to join together to acknowledge the contribution of Public Health to enhancing the well being of the community. WHEREAS', the purpose of Public Health is to reduce the incidence of preventable, life-threatening diseases through community outreach, education, and prevention activities. WHEREAS., the components of public health include outreach by public health nurses to provide education and support to at-risk' individuals and their families; well baby clinics; well child exams and immunizations; case management services for high risk and disabled infants, children, and adults; TB screening and treatment; and home nursing services for the elderly and other homebound residents . WHER2M, chronic diseases account' for 70% of all deaths in the county, with tobacco use responsible for 19% of all deaths. WHEREAS, 1,000 residents were diagnosed with AIDS and another 2,700 were estimated to be HIV-infected as of March 15, 1993. WHEREAS, African American women and West County residents have worse perinatal health outcomes than other county residents. WHEREAS, injury; is thenumberone killer of children and adolescents, with firearms the major 'killer of 10-18 year olds. WHEREAS, motor vehicles crashes account for nearly half' of all unintentional injury deaths. WHEREAS, Contra Costa County has 120 cases' of tuberculosis per year of which 15-20 cases are children, while tuberculosis is being fueled by the HIVJAIDS epidemic, immigration, and poverty-related factors 'such' as overcrowding and homelessness. WHEREAS, declaring Public Health 'Week is .in keeping with the Board of Supervisors strong history of leadership in the area of public health. NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, proclaim April '5- 11, 1993 as "Public health Week. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 6th' day of April'' 1993.
