OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Naming the )
Juvenile Hail Gymnasium .the ) RESOLUTIONNO 93/19
Ray Bishop Gymnasium
WHEREAS Ray Bishop volunteered`' with the Juvenile Hall
Auxiliary from 1976 until his death in 1992. He served two terms
as President and during that time, worked with the Army Corp of
Engineers on the Phillip "Phil" Denofrio` Playfield project. Ray
Bishop was a gentle, kind man, whose contribution to troubled
youth, through his involvement in the Juvenile Hall Auxiliary, is
acclaimed.
WHEREAS the death of Ray Bishop in May of 1992 left all
who knew him saddened. The fact that the Juvenile Hall Auxiliary
wishes to honor his memory is, in itself, a great 'tribute.
WHEREAS he served as President of the Auxiliary for two
terms, he is affectionately 'best known for his role as "rummage
man," which is how he liked to describe himself. Therein lies his
distinctiveness, for although by all. counts he was a successful
business and community leader, it was his unpretentious manner,
coupled' with an unbridled enthusiasm and ''positive attitude, that
made him such an extraordinary individual.
WHEREAS with his dogs Sadie, seated at his side, Ray
travelled to every`' corner of Contra Costa County' to obtain
donations for the Auxiliary. Physically' strong, this friendly,
intelligent, exceptional., gentleman was able to gently persuade
others to strive for excellence. Nothing was too difficult for Ray
to undertake; he refused to accept negative situations skeptics
thought were impossible' to change. The tremendous energy he
possessed when dealing with youth was infectious, resulting in
great accomplishments, and the successful realization of several
projects. Through his resolve, the .vacated United States Steel
Plant building was procured for interim use as the Juvenile Hall
Closet. Funds from this thrift shop continue to support the
Auxiliary's services to youth.
WHEREAS Ray Bishop believed he had a moral obligation to
support under-privileged youth, and he lived that belief by:giving
unselfishly of his time and energy, and by his generous financial
contributions.
WHEREAS in life, Ray Bishop rejected recognition; in
fact, he was embarrassed by it. But with his passing,' the honors
he so richly deserved can be ''bestowed.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, in recognition of Ray Bishop's
extraordinary dedication and generous contributions to youth, that
the gymnasium at Juvenile Hall be named the Ray Bishop Gymnasium in
his memory;
