BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA 1N THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO.92/185 Honoring Lou Bronzan on His Induction Into the Liberty Union High School District Athletic Hall of Fame WEEMWAS,induction ceremonies'for the 1992 Liberty HighSchool Athletic Hall of Fame will be held on March 2.8,1992,honoring special members of the community who have made valuable contributions to the Liberty High School athletic program and Lou Bronzan has been selected to receive this prestigious honor; WHEREAS,Lou came to Brentwood in 1950 as an excellent classroom teacher and coach serving as U.S.history teacher and physical education department chair and athletic director from 1950 until 1961 and coaching both varsity baseball and football for twelve years, WHEREAS,after graduating from Manteca High School in 1941,he attended Modesto Junior College where played football and baseball until World ar'H. He entered the United States Army Air Corps and served three years overseas with the Fifth Air Force; WHEREAS,after the war,he enrolled at the College of the Pacific where he trade his mark in football and baseball. He was a member of the 10-1 championship team. In 1348,his team won the CCAA title and will be inducted into the UOP.Athletic Hall of Fame on May 2, 1992; WIMMAS,after graduating from college,he played professional baseball for the Stockton Ports in the California League. He also played for several top semi-pro teams before coming to Liberty Union High School in 1950; WHEREAS,S,Coach Bronzan built Liberty into a football powerhouse with his amazing string of five straight league champions from 1951 to 1955. His 1951 team was undefeated.'. Coach Bronzan remains the coach with the mostwins in the history of Libertyfootball. His'baseball teams alsowonnumerous EBALt ties; WHEREAS, as athletic director, Coach Bronzan contributed significantly to the establishment of positive athletic policies that have had far`-reaching effects on the future of all LUHS sports; WHEREAS,Coach Bronzan continued to serve Liberty in an administrative role beyond the world of sports. He was appointed the assistant principal in 1962 and became principal in 19661 serving for 17 years in that position until his retirement in 1983, ending 33 years in the district. He also served as Acting Superintendent on two occasions; WHEREAS,he served as the first director of the Brentwood Recreation and Park.District and was the driving force along with Judge Ted Ohmstede behind the development of the district; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby joins the Liberty Union HighSchool District Beard of Trustees and the entire community in honoring Lou Bronzan for his outstanding/contributions as a coach, educator, administrator at Liberty High School and respectfully ac- knowledges his induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hail of Fame. In football,he was named to the High School All-Americart Team in 1956. He was named to the All-East Bay Athletic League for two consecutive years and honorable Mention one year. He also won the'Teddy Ohmstede Most Valuable Back Award"for two years in a row and was awarded the Lions Club Outstanding Player Award. He set a National High School record for consecutive extra points in a single game. One of his most prestigious awards was being named the Most Valuable Player in the North-South Shrine Game' played at the Los Angeles Colliseum in 1957; WHEREAS,as a sophomore,Herman was the starting center on the Lions'basketball team,was top;< rebounder'that season and second in team scaring; as a junior and senior,he led his team in scoring and rebounding,was named All-League and earned the Brentwood Rotary Club's Basketball Award as the Most Valuable Player; WHEREAS,Herman played three years of varsity baseball. As a sophomore in 1955,he played first base for the League Champion Lions and in 1956 when liberty wore the EBAL Co-championship; W1FIEREAS,he also excelled in track. As a freshman,he won the North Coast Section High Jump Championship. Se set two school records--the high jump at 61-112"and in broad jump at 23'11"--winning the League Championship in both events. He was the Liberty Decathlon Champ three years in a row and set a new record each year. Herman is the only Liberty athlete to receive All-League honors in four sports, Rif EIRE S,Herman received a scholarship to the College of the Pacific. In 1957,he won the Frosh- Soph Most Outstanding Player Award. In 1960 he won the Tully Konles Memorial Award (the Ironman Award). WHEREAS,Herman also excelled in the classroom. He had perfect attendance for four years at Liberty,and was a member of the California Scholastic Federation for three consecutive years; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby joins the liberty Union Nigh School District Board of'Trustees and the entire community in honoring Herman Urenda for his outstanding performance as an all-around athlete and scholar while a student at Liberty Union High School and respectfully acknowledges his induction into the LLJHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. He was chosen to play in the North-South Shrine Game played in the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1966; VMEREAS,after graduating from high school,Floyd accepted a football scholarship to the Univer- sity of Calffornia-Los Angeles where he adapted well to the college game and was chosen co-captain in his senioryear.He was selected All-American on the Coaches Kodak All-American Team in 1969and was chosen Outstanding Lineman in the College All-Star Hula Bowl Game; WFIEREAS, after completing an excellent college career, Floyd was drafted by Toronto of the Canadian Football League,but he was unable to play because of severe back problems. In 1971 he returned to Liberty to serve as an assistant football coach; VAMREAS,in 1972,he was back at UCIA as a graduate assistant football coach for the Bruins. In 1974,he accepted theposition of head freshman football coach and varsity assistant to Pepper Rogers at Georgia Tech. One year later,the former Brentwood resident became the special teams coach for the NFL Detroit Lions,where he coached for three years.He left in 1978 to accept the position oflinebacker coach with the San Francisco 49ers. After leaving San Francisco,he moved on to the Minnesota Vikings and then the Houston Oilers where he is presently the Assistant General Manager; NOW,THEREFORE,,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby joins the Liberty Union High School District Board of Trustees and the entire community in honoring Floyd Reese,Jr.,for his contributions to liberty football and his great accomplishments on the gridiron in high school,college and the National Football League and respectfully acknowledges his induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as assistant.coach with Coach Bronzan for 11 years while coaching the junior varsity squad at the same time.He coached the Liberty basketball team for four years and coached the varsity and'B'track and swimming teams for several years; WHEREAS,Coach Merrill was raised in Stockton where heattended the local schools.Heemlled in academics and sports at Stockton High School where he lettered in varsity swimming for four years,played center on the 1943 football team that went undefeated and untied and was inducted into the Stockton High Athletic Hall ofFame in 1988. He was namedAll-League in both 1943 and 1944: WHEREAS,he served in the United States Marine Corps,during World War 11.=After the war,he continued his education at Stockton Junior College and the Collegeof the Pacific. While at Stockton JC he participated in football and swimming. He also swam at the College of the Pacific and was on the 1949 swim team that won the CCAA Conference'Iltle; WHEREAS,under coach Ferrill's coaching,the 1952 and 1953 swim teams captured EBAL titles,and the track team won the league championship in 1952. In 1962,he was elevated to Head Fooball Coach serving from 1962 to 1975,physical education chairperson,and athletic director. He has the highest winning percentage of any Lion coach; WHEREAS,Coach Ferrill taught tough,hard-nosed football that produced many excellent teams over the years.The 1965 and 1969 football squads went undefeated and won EBAL championships. His 1965 undefeated,and untied championship team is considered one of 1.t`berrjes finest ever. Coach Ferrill developed many outstanding players who went on to play college football; WHEREAS,among Coach Ferrill's many achievements was the distinction of beingselected tocoach the Contra Costa All- Stars in1971.He also served as the North Coast representativeon theBoard of Directors for the California StateAthletic Directors Association. He was named the North Coast Section Athletic Director of the Year in 1977,and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the California Athletic Directors Association; WHEREAS,he became Liberty High School's Assistant Principal in 1984 and was appointed Principal in 1986 reth ingfrom that position in 1990.''He served the LUHSD for 39 years'with 30 years related to Liberty athletics,either as a coach or athletic director. After marrying, he and his bride,Merle,moved to the Brentwood area in 1925 and immediately became a loyal supporter of Liberty High School. Mr.Stonebarger has attended more football,basketball,baseball,and softball games in the past 66 years than any other Liens fan. "Grandpa,"as he is fondly known by the students,has a great love for sports and has shown asleep devotion for our youth throughout his life, WHEREAS,along with his closest friend Judge Ohmstede, r.Stonebarger,a carpenter and building contractor,was the technical expert behind construction tasks for the new football stadiums at Liberty High School. Mr.Stonebarger built the present press'box at Ohmstede field, WIWJR AS, Mr. Stonebarger has developed and distributed the schedules for both football;,and basketball games for many years. His many skills and talents have made him invaluable to the atheetic program whether it was repairing a charging sled for football or trimming the infield on a baseball field; WHEREAS, he has served for nine years as a trustee for the Liberty Union'High School Board of Trustees. In that 33 year span,the Honeggers made headlines for their many accomplishments on-the field of athletics and for their contributions to student activities and community service; WHEREAS,Arthur E.Honegger(Art)attended Liberty High School from 1938-41 and earned his varsity letter for three years in football. He was named Most Valuable' player in 1941,lettered two years in basketball and track Art'attended the University of moria-Berkeley where he lettered in football,earned second team All-Coast Conference honors in;1.943 and was team captain for the Golden Bears.He continued to playfootball while serving his country in the'UnitedStates Marine Corps during World War Il playing on the Camp',Pendleton and Camp'Lejeune teams. After,the war,he was a 12th round draft choice of the Chicago Bears,but he chose not to play professional football. Art served as a member of the Oakley Union School District Board of 7bistees from 1948-1961,and later served 12 years on the liberty Union High School Board of Trustees; WHEREAS,Bathaine(Kay)Honegger was a very important part of the Liberty athletic connection during the years her sons played at Liberty High School. She provided transportation and helped with athletic banquets. She also planned many great activities for the various teams and provided the coaches with a pre-season retreat campsite, " WHEREAS,Arthur H.Honegger set a school record in the 70-yar4 high hurdles in 1962 He lettered for the"B"team harriers for two year and earned two varsity letters.'The 1963 Liberty graduate playhed two years of junior vartsty football and two year on the varsity where he was an outstanding defensive halfback. He is a life member of the California Scholarship Federation and was the LUHS Student Body President for the'1962-63 school year and won the Bank of America.Award for math and science in 1963. Art attended the University of Colorado; "WHIy REAS,Steve Honegger,a 1963 Liberty graduate,starred in football,basketball,and track. He played four years earning two varsity football letters. He earned varsity letters for his outstanding play on the basketball court and in track. He was Vice President of his class in 1964-65 and served as an officer of the Future Farmers of America. He attended the University of California at Santa Barara where he played freshman football and three years of rugby, WHEREAS,John E.Honegger,Class of 1968,made his presence felt on the gridiron and hardcourt. He played three years of varsity baskedball and earned the Ted©hmstede Most Valuable Back Award in 1967 for his performance on the football field He was President of his freshman class and Student Body President during his senior year. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where he played rugby. WHEREAS,James(Jim)Honegger,a 1971 Liberty graduate,was a two-sport athlete in high school for four straight years. He earned three varsity letters for football,was All-League and team captain and Most Valuable Player during the 1970 season.He was chosen to play in the 1971 Contra CastalAlameda County;All-Star Football Game. He earned a full scholarship to the University of the Pacific,where he played four years of football. He has continued to be a active leafier in raising funds for athletic uniforms,equipment and supplies throughout the years; AREAS,Judge Ohmstede's unselfish and caring commitment to his alma mater and the students is obvious--from supplying thirst-quenching orange slices during game halftime to purchasing and planting flowers on the campus to beautify the school to donating money to many athletes to purchase shoes or pay for other essential items. He has provided counsel and advice to both students and parents,assisted students with financial aid and transportation to attendcollege; WHEREAS, he was instrumental in the development of the Brentwood Recreation Department . serving as an assistant director and as director of the department. Prior to the establishment of the depart mens, he founded, managed,and coached community softball and baseball teams for both teenagers and, adults; fi1-T.�-.�REAS,on October 7, 1967,Judge Ohmstede was honored by the Liberty High School District Board of'Trustees by naming the stadium in his honor in recognition of his numerous contributions to the L.UHS athletic program and for contributing his time,`'`talent and effort to improve the community.
