Costa County
Countygovernment is the oldest' form of local government in the
United''States, and 98 percent of the nation's population resides in
counties.
California's 58 counties employee 275,000 people and spend almost
$20 billion annually. The Golden State is also home to the
nation's most populous county--Los Angeles-and the largest county
inland size--san Bernardino.
County governments are often the last available resource for
providing emergency and long-term services for the poor, the
homeless, immigrants, refugees, and the disadvantaged. County
governments own and operate 10000 healthcare facilities and over
2,000 health departments across the country.
over the Last 3Q years, ;county governments hate assumed increasing
responsibility for the administration and financing of health,
justice, transportation, housing, and community development
programs. County governments have also been assigned a greater
role in salving area-wide problems dealing with air pollution,
solid waste disposal., Airports,' transit systems,' regional parks,
and other issues.
NOW, T iERE 'E RE', BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
declares April 4 - 11, 1992, as NATIONAL COUNTY G(YV1UU8M WEEK in
Contra Costa County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON March 17* 1992, by a unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
