February 19, 1992 marks the 50th anniversary of the signingof
Executive order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which ;set
in motion the .'.relocation and internment of Japanese Americans
during World War II
The internment of Japanese, Americans during World War II has
implications for every American, for when the constitutional rights
of one group of people are violated, the rights of all Americans
are jeopardized'.
The 50th Anniversary commemoration offers all Americans an
opportunity to reflect on that period of our nation's'' history ,and
to apply the lessons of the internment by ensuring that the
constitutional protections guaranteed to all citizens are
vigilantly protected and upheld.
our democracy is open ': not only to acknowledge damage to our
Constitution but to 'redress and restore that damage. This free and

acknowledged the injustice of relocation and internment and
provided for an apology as well as symbolic restitution by the
United States government.
