HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 02031987 - 87-58 i THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA In the Matter of : ) Additional Superior Court ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/ 58 Judicial Positions. ) WHEREAS the workload of the Superior Court in the County of Contra Costa has increased significantly in the past several years; and WHEREAS studies conducted by the Judicial Council of California show the clear need for additional judicial positions in the Superior Court; and WHEREAS no new positions have been added to the Superior Court in the County of Contra Costa for the past five years; and WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors in 1986 supported the addition of one new Superior Court judicial position to be effective January 1, 1987; and WHEREAS no new Superior Court positions were authorized for the County of Contra Costa in 1986; and WHEREAS there is now a clear need for two additional Superior Court judicial positions to be effective January 1, 1988; and WHEREAS the County presently has under construction a Superior Court Annex which will provide adequate courtroom space for two additional Superior Court judicial positions; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF , CONTRA COSTA RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors supports an increase in the number of Superior Court judicial positions from 15 to 17 effective January 1, 1988 on the condition that the positions are accompanied by a State appropriation of $60,000 annually per position to assist in covering the added cost of staffing and equipping the additional positions. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa respectfully requests the members of its legislative delegation to insure that two additional Superior Court judicial positions are included in any omnibus court bill which is considered by the Legislature in 1987 . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors directs the County Administrator to forward a copy of this Resolution to each member of this County' s legislative delegation, to the Chairpersons of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee, to the Governor of California, and to the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 3rd day of February, 1987 . During the discussion of the additional judicial positions Board members commented on the problems associated with the funding of these two positions. They noted the need to increase revenues and to seriously consider the consolidation of the Marshal-Sheriff functions as a cost-saving measure. Therefore, IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the County Administrator is REQUESTED to work with the County Judicial staff to develop a program to fund the new positions through the Marshal-Sheriff consolidation and increased fine revenues. cc: County Administrator Sheriff-Coroner Marshal Superior Court Administrator I hereby certify that this Is a true and correct copy of an action taken and entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervisors on the date shown.
