HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011981 - 1981-404 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming ) April 21, 1981 as "John Muir ) RESOLUTION NUMBER 81/404 Day" in Contra Costa County. ) 3 WHEREAS John Muir was born April 21, 1838, in the City of Dunbar, East Lothian District, Scotland, and came to America as a boy in 1849, making his first visit to California in 1867; and WHEREAS John Muir, who was "fond of everything that was wild" in his Scottish homeland, was dedicated to sharing that love of wildness by working actively to preserve America's wilderness for future generations; and WHEREAS in 1880 John Muir became a resident and fruit grower in the City of Martinez, County of Contra Costa, California, raising his family and living there until his death in 1914, and from where he produced much of the writing in support of America's vanishing wilderness which eventually helped establish a national policy of land preservation; and WHEREAS it was at John Muir's urging that California's Yosemite National Park was created in 1890, specifically to preserve its wilderness character, and that he was also responsible for the establishment of Sequoia, Mt. Rainier, Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon national parks, as well as 21 million acres of forest preserves; and WHEREAS the John Muir Home in Martinez was declared a National Historic Site in 1964, commemorating an outlook on our environment and natural resources that is still championed today; and WHEREAS the 143rd anniversary of John Muir's birth is being celebrated throughout the week of April 21; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, State of California, hereby PROCLAIMS April 21, 1981, as "John Muir Day" in Contra Costa County. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this proclamation be conveyed with greetings to the City of Dunbar, Scotland, which recently established a sister city---"twinning"-- relationship with the City of Martinez, the County Seat of Contra Costa, and to the East Lothian District Council, the immediate governmental body for Dunbar. PASSED and ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board this 14th day of April, 1981. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution adopted by the Board of Supervisors on April 14, 1981.
