HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011981 - 1981-370 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of } Declaring April 20-26, 1981 } z as "Forgotten Victims Week" ) RESOLUTION 81/370 WHEREAS there has been insufficient attention to the rights of crime victims and witnesses in our society; and WHEREAS it is the duty of all citizens and institutions to play positive roles in improving the plight of victims of violent crime and their survivors, and to restore effectiveness to the administration of criminal justice; and WHEREAS better reporting of crime and greater willingness of persons to testify are essential to the control of crime and the improvement of justice; and WHEREAS creating a better understanding of the rights of crime victims and witnesses and the nature of our criminal justice system will help to achieve the goals of crime reduction, and the restoration of fairness and effectiveness to the administration of justice; and WHEREAS on June 30, 1980 the Office of Criminal Justice Planning awarded funds in the amount of $103,000 to Contra Costa County District Attorney' s Office Victims/Witness Assistance Program; and WHEREAS the purpose of the program is to assist victims of all types of crimes by providing services such as assisting in filing claims for State Compensation, providing liaison and referrals to special counselling facilities, and providing various follow-up support services to victims and their families; and WHEREAS services to witnesses include notification prior to their being subpoenaed in criminal cases and of changes in the court calendar, assistance at the Courthouse such as explaining unfamiliar procedures, and providing bilingual information. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY ORDERED that April 20, 1981 through April 26, 1981 is DECLARED as "Forgotten Victims Week" in order to increase public support for programs of victim and witness assistance. PASSED by the Berard on March 31, 1981, by the following vote : AYES : Supervisors Eanden, Schroder, McPeak, Torlakson, Powers .
