RESOLUTION NUMBER 691589 WHEREAS the Honorable Everett M. Dirksen , United States Senator, State of Illinois , passed away on September 7 , 1969; and WHEREAS Senator Dirksen , whose father died when he was seven years old , worked his way through high school , college, and law school ; distinguished himself in the armed forces in World War I entering the service as a private and advancing to the grade of lieutenant; and devoted nearly four decades of his life to the public service in the United State House of Representatives and the United States Senate ; and WHEREAS Senator Dirksen in his score of years of service in the United States Senate was widely recognized as a leader and statesmen , and adviser to both Decocratic and Republican Presidents ; and WHEREAS Senator Dirksen provided the strength to insure the passage of much notable legislation inclusive of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and to guarantee approval of other vital actions such as the ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty in 1963 ; and WHEREAS Senator Dirksen was a unique and unparalleled figure , noted for his depth of knowledge , courage , humor, eloquence, and wisdom and whose oratory will always be an outstanding part of the lore of the Senate of the United States of America ; NOW,, THEREFORE , BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it expresses deep regret upon the passing of United States Senator Everett M. Dirksen extends its sincere sympathy to his family, commends to all his outstanding accomplishments as a dedicated public servant, and adjourns this official meeting in his memory. PASSED and ADOPTED this 10th day of September, 1969 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors J . P. Kenny , A. M. Dias , T. J . Coll , E. A. Linscheid, J . E. Moriarty . NOES : None . ABSENT: None .
