IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Expressing
Deep Regret on the Passing RESOLUTION NUMBER 69/5
of Senator George Miller, Jr.
WHEREAS on January 1, 1969 the people of the County of
Contra Costa and of the State of California lost with the death
of Senator George Miller, Jr. one of the most able legislators
ever to serve in the California Legislature; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller, a native Californian, was educated
in the Richmond Public Schools, Saint Mary' s College, and the
School of Jurisprudence in Oakland; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller entered the public service in 1936
as an appointed official in the City of Richmond and continued
as a government employee with the federal Internal Revenue
Service, and in later years engaged in the private businesses
of accounting and insurance; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller was elected to the California
Assembly in 1946, served in that body for a term of two years,
was elected to the California Senate in 1948 and served in that
body for two decades without interruption of tenure by virtue
of re-elections through overwhelming endorsements of the voters
of Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS the stature of Senator Miller in the California
Senate was exemplified in his role as Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Finance for the last 11 years, during which time
he contributed Immensely to the fiscal stability of the state;
and.
WHEREAS Senator Miller represented the interests of
Contra Costa County with zeal and intensity, as typified by his
tenacious fight to protect the invaluable natural water supply
of the county; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller comprehensively represented all
the people of the State of California in a dedicated and forceful
manner, as illustrated by his effectiveness in obtaining passage
of progressive legislation in the field of education; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller always made time despite his
demanding legislative work schedules to consult with his con-
stituents and support the interests of his party; and
WHEREAS Senator Miller was widely known for his loyalty,
integrity, generosity, courage, humors eloquence, and wisdom;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF
THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it expresses
deep regret upon the passing of Senator George Miller, Jr. ,
extends its ,sincere sympathy to his wife and other members of
his family, adjourns this official meeting in his memory, and
commends his devotion and accomplishments to the people of his
county and his state as an outstanding example of dedicated
public service.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 7th day of January, 1969, by
the following vote of the Board:
AYES: Supervisors J. P. Kenny, A. M. Dias,
T. J. Coll, E. A. Linscheid, J. E. Moriarty.
NOES: done.
