Regret on the Passing of
Carl L. Johnson, Veteran RESOLUTION NUMBER 69/25
Newspaperman.
YMEREAS Mr. Carl L. Johnson, veteran local newspaperman,
passed away on January 1, 1969; and
lt,MIERE AS air. Johnson, a native Californian, prepared for his
career in journalism at the University of California at Berkeley at
which institution he was managing editor of the "Daily Californian"
and from which institution he graduated in 1939; and
10EREAS Mr. Johnson began his career as a reporter with the
Antioch Ledger in 1939 and then within the following twenty-five years
held responsible newspaper positions including service with the United
Press in San Francisco and Sacramento; county seat reporter for the
Richmond Independent; reporter for the Oakland Tribune; reporter, city
editor, and managing editor for the Gazette in Martinez; and Contra
Costa County correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle; and
WHEREAS Mr. Johnson interrupted his newspaper career to
enter the United States Wavy in World War II during, which conflict he
served so meritoriously as to earn advancement from an enlisted status
to the rank of Lieutenant Commander; and
WHEREAS Mr. Johnson was well known to many county officials
and held their confidence as one who reported the news factually; was
generously complimentary of meritorious service; and outspoken, with-
out ill will, in controversial situations; and
WHEREAS Mr. Johnson for the past several years was in failing
health and endured courageously a series of major operations from which
he recovered through a determined will to live;
NOW, 'THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA
COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it expresses sincere regret
upon the passing of Mr. Carl L. Johnson, extends to his wife, his
mother and other surviving members of his family its deepest sympathy;
and adjourns this official meeting in his memory.
PASSED and ADOPTED this l4th day of January, 1969 by the
following vote of the Board:
AYES.* Supervisors J. P. Denny, A. M. Dias, T. J. Coll,
E. A. Linscheid, J. E. Moriarty.
