to Mrs. Maxine Page Johnson ) RESOLUTION NUMBER 68/266
for Thirty-five years of
Dedicated Public Service. )
WHEREAS Mrs. Maxine Page Johnson has announced her retirement
from employment with the County of Contra Costa, California effective
June 30, 1968; and
WHEREAS Mrs. Johnson, a native Californian, after training to
become a Registered Nurse and serving in that capacity for brief
periods in other hospitals, has been employed for thirty-five years
as Head Nurse and Supervising Nurse by the Contra Costa County
Hospital; and
WHEREAS Mrs. Johnson became interested in the plight of mentally
ill persona more than twenty-five years ago and quickly demonstrated
a capacity to abate their fears, ease their cares, and without
restraints control their outbursts; and
WHEREAS her solicitude for the unfortunate, bath mentally ill
and alcoholic, made her a logical choice for the top position in the
nursing care of such afflicted individuals in which role she has
served effectively and unselfishly for nearly three decades; and
WHEREAS during her tenure in charge of psychiatric nursing care,
Mrs . Johnson with substantial personal sacrifice studied and explored
new avenues for the care of the mentally ill and alcoholic; introduced
better methods of attention ineluasive of "open doors treatment arrange-
ments; successfully promoted enlightened legislation for the protection
and treatment of the persons needing psychiatric services; and' led the
way to the establishment in Contra Costa County of one of the most com-
prehensive community mental health programs in the State of California
and the United States,* and
WHEREAS Mrs. Johnson for many years has been a leader in public
employee union organization and activities and has diligently sought
increased employee benefits and improved labor-management relations;
and
WHEREAS Mrs. Johnson has also been named to and participated
actively in medical and educational groups such as the Contra Costa
County Mental .Health Advisory Board, the Medical Service Committees of
the Diablo Valley College and. the Contra Costa College, and the
National. League of Nursing and further was invariably found to be
available to assist in community affairs;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF
CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it extends to Mrs. Maxine Page
Johnson its sincere appreciation and compliments for her thirty-five
years of dedicated public service, for her significant role in placing
Contra Costa County among the state and national leaders in community
mental health programs, and for her concerted efforts in the field of
labor-management relations; and
BE IT BY THIS BOARD FURTHER RESOLVED that it wishes for
Mrs. Johnson a long and contented life in retirement and a Full measure
of the comfort and happiness which she for many gears has striven un-
selfishly and successfully to provide for countless other persons.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 23rd day of April, 1968, by the fallowing
vote of the Board.
