HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01011968 - 1968-238 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of the } Untimely Death of } RESOLUTION NO. 68/238 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. } 3 WHEREAS the Beard of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California, like all Americans, was shocked beyond belief at the senseless, violent act resulting in the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • and WHEREAS his untimely death removed from the American scene an outstanding exponent of racial freedom and equality and a vigorous, eloquent, and effective leader of the countless thousands of people, both Negro and White, who seek just treatment of all by non-violent means; and WHEREAS his death is another chapter in the never-ending saga of sacrifice for a recognized cause; and WHEREAS in this Hely week all people throughout the nation should act to heal racial scars and continue on with uninterrupted efforts so that all may justifiably asks "America! America.! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea. 11 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THIS BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLVED that it extends to the wife and other members of the family of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. its deepest sympathy upon their extremely unfortunate loss, and hopes that their grief may be somewhat assuaged by the knowledge that the names Of Lincoln, Ghandi, Kennedy and King read as a litany of libertys that without a Good Friday of sorrow there would not have been a victory of Easter Sunday; and that the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will forever be associated with the maxim that self- sacrifice is the highest rule of grace. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 9th day of April, 1968 by the following vote of the Hoards AYES: Supervisors J. P. Kenny, J. E. Moriarty, T. J. Coli, E. A. Linscheid, A. M. Dias. NOES: None. ABSENT: None.
