An Ordinance Prohibiting the Eree-
tion and Maintenance of Signs, Pie-
tures, Transparencies, Advertise-
ments and Mechanical Advertising
Devices Upon the Public Highways
In the County of Contra Costa Under
the Jurisdiction of the Board of Su-
pervisors of the County of Contra
Costa' and Providing the Punish-
nient for a Violation of This Ordi-
nanee.
The Board of Supervisors of the
County of Contra Costa, State of Cal-
ifornia, do ordain as follows:
Section 1: 1`+,"o person, firm, or cor-
poration shall erect, post, place, dis-
play, or maintain any sign, picture,
advertisement, transparency or any me-
chanical advertising device of any kind.
or nature upon any public highway,
street,road,alley,lane,court,place,trail
or bridge in the County of Contra
Costa, State of California, which said
j public highway, street, road, alley,
lane, court, place,trail or bridge is
under the jurisdiction or control of
the Board of Supervisors of the Coun-
ty of Contra Costa; provided, how-
fver, that this Ordinance shall not
effect any public highway or road
or place in the said County of Con-
tra: Costa belonging to the State of
California, or under the jurisdiction
or control of the State Department of
Engineering, or the Department of the
State of California, having jurisdic-
tion over state highways; provided,
further, that nothing in this ordinance
shall be so construed as to prevent
the posting of any notice provided by
Iaw or by the order of any Court to
b.- posted.
Section 2: Any sign, picture, adver-
tisement, transparency or any mechan-
ical advertising device of any kind
or nature, so placed in violation of
this ordinance, is hereby declared to
be a public nuisance and may be
forthwith removed from any such
public highway, street, road, alley,
lane, court, place', trail, or bridge by
any Peace Officer of the County of
Contra Costa.
Section 3: Any person, firm or cor-
poration violating any of the provi-
sions of this Ordinance shall be guilty
of a misdemeanor and upon convic-
tion thereof, shall be punishable by
a fine not exceeding Five Hundred
Dollars ($500.00) or by imprisonment
in the County Jail of the County of
Contra Costa, State of California, for
a period of not exceeding six (6)
months, or by both fine and imprison-
ment.
Section 4: The Board of Supervisors
hereby declares that it passes this
Ordinance in the interest of public
safety and for the protection of the
traveling public upon said highways
under the general police. power grant-
et? to the said Board.
Section 5: If any section of said sec-
tion, sentence, clause, phrase or words
of this Ordinance for any reason is
held unconstitutional or invalid, the
decision holding the same unconstitu-
tional or invalid shall not affect the
validity of the remaining portions of
this Ordinance. The Board of Super-
visors hereby declare that they have
passed this Ordinance and each sec-
tion, subsection, sentence, clause,
phrase, and word thereof, irrespective
of the fact that any one or more sec-
tions, subsections, sentences, clauses,
phrases, or words be declared uncon-
stitutional or invalid.
Section 6: This Ordinance shall take
effect and be in force from and after
the 5th day of December, 1929, and
1_)efore the expiration of fifteen (15)
days after the passage hereof, it shall
be published with the, names of the
members voting for and against it
i'or one (1) week in the Contra Costa
Standard, a newspaper of general
circulation published in the said
County of Contra Costa, State of Cal-
ifornia.
Passed and adopted this 4th clay of
November, 1929, by the following

Ayes: Supervisors Knott, Olsson,
lla.yden, Buchanan and Trembath.
Nees: None.
Absent: None.
