January 19, 1988 for consideration County DATE: January 26, 1988 J' SUBJECT: VETERANS' ADMINISTRATION DAY CARE CENTER IN MARTINEZ SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION REQUEST: That each Supervisor write an individual letter of concern to the Director of the VA Medical Center, Martinez. That a copy be sent to Ernest E. Bradford, Veterans Service Officer. That the Chairman of the Board ask other elected officials to write letters of concern to the Hospital Director. BACKGROUND: My office has received numerous letters of concern from family members and clients of the Veterans Administration Day Care Center in Martinez, protesting the closure of the Day Care Center. The program benefits veterans ' suffering from psychiatric disorders who would otherwise have no opportunity for treatment. In addition, it provides relief for family members. As reported in the Martinez News-Gazette, January 11, 1988, "Closure of the existing program will take a heavy toll on our veterans. in Contra Costa County. They will be without sorely needed services. " Attached is . a copy of the article.
