SUBJECT: P-300 #20632 — Contra Costa County Fire Protection District
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Position Adjustment Resolution Number 20632,to add three permanent full-time Fire Captain (56-hour) positions(RPTA) and
cancel two Fire Training Captain (40-hour) positions#11385 and#11386(RPTE)as recommended by the Interim Human Resources
Director.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Upon approval, this action will result in an annual cost of$201,300 which is funded from the Contra Costa County Fire Department
Reserve Funds.
BACKGROUND:
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is requesting the addition of these positions to meet the current staffing needs of the
department.After the line of duty deaths that occurred July 21, 2007, a multi-agency investigative report was done,the report identified
areas of improvement to minimize the potential for additional line of duty deaths. One area of improvement that was identified was a
need to improve immediate and continuous training for all suppression personnel. By utilizing three 56-hour Fire Captains assigned to
Training to perform training functions, the Fire District will be able to establish important and necessary training that can occur,on a 24-
hour; 7-Day basis.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If this request is not approved; the Contra!Costa County Fire Protection District's ability to provide recommended training will be
impacted.
