IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING RESOLUTION NO. 2008/728
DECEMBER 27,2008 as CONTRA,COSTA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT DAY
WHEREAS,The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors declared the establishment of the Contra Costa
County Junior College District (CCCJCD) on December 27, 1948, created `as a result of a special
election held on December 14, 1948; and
WHEREAS, The founding Board of Trustees, appointed,on January 12, 1949 by County Superintendent of
Schools Bryan O. Wilson, included Bert Coffey (Richmond), Fred R. Abbott (Brentwood), George R.
Gordon (Martinez), G. Elton Brombacher (Richmond), and O•J. Wohlgemuth (Walnut Creek); and
WHEREAS, The Contra Costa Community College District was the fust countywide junior college district,
and is the second oldest and . orie, oflthe largest .multi-college districts in the State of

California; and

WHEREAS; The Contra Costa Community 'College District began„as two old.army classrooms at Camp

Stoneman in Pittsburg in September;1949; and

WHEREAS, The College District establtshed Contra Costa College at ahe I laiser'. Shipyards on October 10
1949, Diablo Valley,:College"in Martinez iri,September 1950, and L-.os Medanos"College in 1973; and
WHEREAS, 3'he Contra Costa Community College,,District Office has;been located,in th6city of Martinez
since 1 S►49-fast in the Hotel James, later`in the Pahnist`:butlding`and finally dedreated.in 1972 at 500
Cour t:StreetasWthe George R. Gordon.Education Center; and .z

WHEREAS; the Contra"'Costa County Junior College District (CCCJC, was renamed°the Contra Costa
Coinmznity CollegeaDistrict in November 197::1 and
WHEREAS
The` ContraCostar Cominuruty College District has established three outreach° educational
facilities it'Bre twood, San Ramon and.'Walnut;Creek, and ,

WHEREAS, The Contra Costa Community' College District serves over 38 000 students offers more than
4,000 classes each semester; and awards over T;700 degrees and ce ttficates __y;,;and
WHEREAS, fihe voters of Contra Costa County approved bonds in 2002 and 2006totlhn'g $405.5 nnillion
allowing the District,to undertake its fust major modernization since 1948,to timprove aging facilities;

WHEREAS, The Contra Costa Community College District provides through its%6lleges workforce training
and basic 'skills ediicA1on, prepares students for. transfer to fout gear institutions and offers
opportunities to all residents for ltfelong earnug,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY BOARD OF
SUPERVISORS hereby declares December-27`h 2008 as "Costa Costa Community College District
Day" in Contra Costa County and congratulates the Contra Costa Community College District on its
60`'�.nniversary of educating students in Contra Costa.
