EAST BAY STAND DOWN -
WHEREAS, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimate
that one-third of the homeless in our country are'U.S. Military Veterans, and there are an estimated 6,000
homeless Veterans in the nine San Francisco Bay Area Counties;and
WHEREAS, the problems of these displaced Veterans are very difficult to address through common access points
and existing service delivery systems;and
WHEREAS, more than 15% of the population over the age of eighteen in Contra Costa and the other-counties in
the Greater Bay Area are Veterans;and
WHEREAS, over 2,000 volunteers'have come togetherlto establish East Bay✓Stand Down to help the less fortunate
Veterans and their farful�es who have found therxselves ih need;"and
WHEREAS, since its smceptionmin ,7 999; East Bay. Stand Down has directly assisted over; 1,500 Veterans by
providing housing, employment,Jiealth,dental,and legal services,and":w ' ,
WHEREAS, from August,-? through-August 10, 2008, the..annual East Bay Stand WDown event"-vas successfully

performed under,the leader"ship of the local Veterans organizations including the Veterans,ofl oreign Wars,
the Vietnam Veterans,,;of Diablo .Valley; the AMVETS, the Veterans Remembrance Cori3mittee, the
Amerfean Legion,and the Patriot Guard Riders,and; IP
